how do i get avi to play in divx?

I have been trying like hell to get .avi movies to play in Divx. I have installed ac3 filter and xvid codecs. Whenever i play a movie i flashes the movie real wuick and then shows the default divx screen. please any input is welcome. Windows media players works fine but not divx and ive reinstlaled it 3 times.
