how do I hookup stereo to my tv without vcr?

I have my stereo hooked up to my vcr (red and black cords). I can hear the tv through the stereo speakers that way. When I hookup the red and black cords through the stereo to the tv they dont work. It only works if I go through the vcr. I want to hook it up to the tv so I can turn the speakers down when I turn the tv down. Can anyone guide me?

Yeah, unhook the red and black cords because the audio cords are red and white. When you get the right ones, run the audio outputs of the TV to the audio inputs of the stereo and throw the VCR away.
