...the bottom? How do I tell what's exactly is wrong with the water, and how do I fix it?
 
goldfish should never be in anything smaller than a 10 gallon,they grow,that would be a good start,and a filter if you dont have one,they are very messy fish....
 
Get a 20-300 gallon tank and transfer the fish into it. Then your goldfish should be happy, as long as you commit to weekly 30% water changes.
