How do I install DVD-ROM drive firmware?

Ok, so I own a Dell Latitude C400 desktop and an external CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. I want to install new firmware on it so that it can read DVD+RW's. I've checked, and the newer firmware allows this. It requires me to create a floppy disk with the firmware setup. No problem, but I have to swap out my DVD drive for the floppy drive- I can't have both plugged in at the same time. So when I boot up the computer like it tells me to with floppy drive in it, it tells me it can't find the DVD drive (obviously). How can I get around this? Is there a way to copy whatever was written to the floppy onto the computer, hook up my DVD drive, and then run the firmware update? If anyone knows how to do this or even has an idea, it would be greatly appreciated.
