How do I prevent static build-up on my cat?

My cat's a Maine Coon, and so he's got medium-long hair. We live in Nebraska, where winters are very cold and dry. Lately he's been so static-y that when he rubs up on stuff he shocks himself.

Is there some pet safe cure for this? All the human cures seem kind of dangerous for pets.
