How do I rip a DVD to watch to my iPad?

I own a couple commercial DVDs (Toy Story 3, etc.) that I would like to rip and place on my new iPad. I'm not sure how to go about doing this. What are some of the better ripping software programs out there? What video format do I choose to rip into? I don't want huge files, but I also don't want crappy quality.
