How do i set up wireless internet connection in my acer laptop?

the network connection tab only has two connection: modem or broadband. When I tried to create a new connection of wi-fi, there was no option. it has to be either modem or broadband. What should I do?
I use windows xp professional. My laptop is quite new.

When your wireless adapter senses a wireless connection point in the area, it will tell you with a small popup inthe lower right. Click on this to connect.

If there is no popup, click on the wirelss icon in the lower right and a list should appear. You cannot connect to a wireless internet connection without a wireless connection point such as a wireless router..
