How do I train my dog not to cry and whine at night when she wants attention?

She can stay inside all day without having to take a leak. At night she sleeps in the same room as us but cries and wimpers every couple of hours to wake us up to go outside to pee/poop. Often, she just wants to go outside and sniff around. We're losing sleep over this. Help!!

Wow, she's got you humans trained good. lol
She's trained you to come when she cries. This needs to stop.
Take her outside to go pee/poo the minute before you go to bed. Make sure she's emptied out everything, and take away her water and food so that she cannot tank up before bed.
Then put her in her crate and let her cry. I suggest investing in earplugs for the first couple of nights. She needs to learn to sleep all night and that you're not going to come comfort her every time she cries.
Also, play with her a lot before bed. Get her really tired so that she's ready to sleep when it comes to bed time.
As long as she doesn't do her business in her crate, keep her in there all night and let her cry until she learns that the night is for sleeping, not for doing what ever she feels like doing.
IF you are not crate training her now, I suggest trying it. It gives the dog a safe place to sleep and helps them feel a bit more secure. Dogs usually will not pee or poo in their own bed because that means they have to sleep in it, and they prefer not to, so if they are contained in their crate, they will usually hold it until you let them out.

What I do is I get an empty can put some coins in it and everytime my dog barks I shake the can and he will just stop
