How do I travel long term when my visa requires a return ticket?

I'm going to West Africa next year and I'm staying there for at least six months. I'd have to renew my visitor's visa every three months. But would I still have to purchase a return ticket since the return date won't be till six months later? I don't think a round trip ticket can stretch out that far. Thanks!
