How do I upgrade to a Verizon iphone and sell it on ebay?

I've searched for this question but all the answers (I could find) were from 2011 or earlier, so I want to make sure nothing has changed.

I like my current phone, but I'm eligible for a free upgrade to a iphone 4 with Verizon. I'm going to be with Verizon for the next 2 years anyway so I'd like to get the iphone to sell on ebay. I'm pretty sure I will need to activate it and use it for a period of time... anybody know how long? And does anybody have a link that explains how I clear the data/unlock it/whatever else I need to do before I sell it?

Yoda - I don't want to keep the new phone. I like my phone that I'm using now, and plan to use it for the next 2 years. So I want to upgrade, but then sell the NEW iphone on ebay to make some money. Sorry I didn't say that better originally... thanks!

What seems to be the question here? I don't understand it the way you stated it.

Why can't you take your current phone to Verizon outlet store in your city, they will upgrade the phone for you, activate it & even transfer the old contacts from your old phone to the new. They can even give you a discount on the new phone if you want to sell the old phone back to them or you can keep your old phone & do whatever you want on ebay with it !
Your old phone will be Unlocked by Verizon automatically when you upgrade to the new.

So what are you confused about ?
