I'm trying to play my 360 with my wireless controller but the rechargeable battery died and I don't have my charger with me. Is there some way to use regular batteries without a battery holder?

To use your controller without a battery pack is very simple, if you know your science. If you've got any soda cans lying around, take the ring pulls of them. You only need 2. Now, find an old penny (preferably copper as this is a conductor of electricity). Place the batteries into your controller, making sure they're the right way up. Balance them so they don't fall out. Now, take the two ring pulls, put them on top of eachother and slot them in above the batteries, making sure that both ends of the ring pulls touch either battery. Then, take the coin and place it above the ring pulls, this secures the ring pulls in place and conducts the electricity. Give it a try.
