How do the shift asst. ball bearings go in a Ford F-250 ZF 42 5 Speed Transmission?

Hi, I have an 88 Ford F-250 w/ a 5 speed transmission that we had to rebuild. It is a ZF 42 and we have tried to put it back together but don't know if the shift assist ball bearings face toward the shaft or away. Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks in advance!!
