how do you decide who is on the defense and who is on the offense is basketball?

i already asked a question about bball today, but i forgot to add this in
how do you decide which team is one offense and defense, do you like, chose, and then switch at half time or something?
and explain offense and defense, how can you score if you're always defending, how can you defend if you're always trying to score?

if u mean at the beginnng of each quarter its whoever got jump ball at the beginning of the game get the ball at the 3rd quater and the other team gets it at the 2nd and 4ht quarter thats in the nba. but if you play rec aau college or hs its whoever has the jump ball to start that quater.
 
what ever team has the ball is on offense and the other team is defense. the ball switches when the offense scores, or if the defense can make a turnover, also if the ball goes out on the offense the defense gets the ball and they become offense
