how do you fix audio lag in handbrake?

I used Handbrake to encode an .avi video so I can play it on iTunes. I have used handbrake before with similar videos and it worked fine but this time the audio is like five seconds behind the video. Is there a way to fix this? How? I appreciate your answers.
