How do you get back in the US if you get stuck after a cruise?

We are taking a cruise in December, We don't have passports. I was just wondering if something happened how would we get back in the country?
Legally if you are going in by ship you do not need a passport as long as you leave and return from the same port.
 
If you don't have a passport you won't be allowed to leave the ship when it docks in other countries, so getting 'back' would not be a problem.

However, if you had an emergency and needed to get home in a hurry, you would have to wait until the ship docked in a US (assuming you are a US citizen) port.

If you are leaving in December, you probably still have time to get a passport. I would HIGHLY suggest you do get them.
 
You will need a passport if you're going into another country or they wont let you on the ship, if you are staying in the country then you are fine.
