How do you get rid of night terrors?

Night terrors are very scary to the person that witnesses it. The person who experiences the actual terror, doesn’t usually even remember it happened. Night terrors usually occur in the slow wave or the lighter sleep cycle. Night terrors are more common in children, but people of all ages can experience them. For the person witnessing the night terror, they may see sweating, shaking, screaming, crying, the sleeping person’s eyes may be open, and all outward appearances it would seem the person is actually awake.

Parents that witness this happening in their young children tend to become very distresses because they are not able to fix the child. In most cases the only thing that can be done when a night terror is happening is to sit back and let it happen. In my experience, any kind of soothing or comforting words will not really help. It may make the parent feel better though. The only real treatment for night terrors is stopping them before they can happen.

The use of chamomile is a popular herbal remedy to help relax a person. There are chamomile teas readily available. I would suggest one that has no sugar, and do not add sugar to flavor. These are dissolvable tablets that are placed on or under the tongue, this is great for kids. Give the chamomile tablets about 15 minutes before you are going to sleep.

A homeopathic approach to treating night terrors is using the herbal treatment called Bad Dream Sprinkles. The sprinkles dissolve quickly and can be administered by simply sprinkling some of the granules on child’s tongue. The sprinkles are made up of a combination of several herbs that promote sleep. The sprinkles include, chamomile, passion flower, nat sulph, aconite, and kali phos. Give the sprinkles before going to bed, if child wakes up with a terror, sprinkle more on the person’s tongue every 15 minutes until they can relax again.

Another natural treatment for night terrors is the use of lavender. There are a number of different candles, room diffusers, and even sprays that can be used in the house. Burn a candle before going to bed, and leave the bedroom door closed, this should help trap in the lavender. Don’t forget to blow out before you get into bed. You can also purchase lavender oil that can be put in a nice warm bath. Lavender has a calming effect and can encourage the deep, peaceful sleep that is needed to avoid night terrors.
