...on your iPod (before you unloc? Once when I was listening to music on my 2nd gen iPod touch and when I turned the screen on it showed pause, skip back, and skip foreward controls before I unlocked it and opened the music app. How can I make that happen all the time? It makes it easier to pause and skip.
 
Press the "Home" button twice quickly, it comes up if you do that, and you do not have to unlock your iPod.

This is also helpful when you are on applications and Safari.
