This is for an essay in my AP geography class. No names will be used. It will not be published. It's just between me and my teacher.

I want your honest opinion whether it is based upon facts or not.
If you'd like to speak for other people that you know who have voiced their opinion on the subject, feel free.

It'd be great to get answers from people who are not Americans, but if you are American, what do you think the foreign opinion is?

you can examine this in so many different levels:

depends on the kinds of locals that meets them. most locals would be ignorant and educated therefore arrogant with these english speakers. they would treat americans much like animals trying to defend their territory. if americans visit places where tourism is common, the locals would become accustomed and realize that a good way to make a living would be to treat them nice and make a little money from services and souvenirs. other locals might act like you and i; people who are used to seeing tourists and really not care about what they are saying, but just acknowledging that they came here just for their pleasure. none of our business and no one is bothered, neither the locals nor the tourists.

I speak four languages, Arabic, French, Spanish and English. Americans who travel and do not even speak the language of the nation that are visiting are rude and ignorant. There is no excuse why people cannot learn at least the basics of a foreign language. The Internet makes it easy and so does Cable and Satellite TV.

Well, I've working for hotels 10 years already and I don't mind. I can't expect that all Americans will come to my island speaking Spanish, which is the official language here. Actually I prefer them to talk to me in English instead than in a Spanish hard to understand, with words we don't use because many Americans come here talking Mexican Spanish. Something else is that if an American person talks to me in Spanish I keep talking in Spanish every time I meet him/her.

Yeah, I went to the UK once and it drove me crazy that my fellow travelers kept trying to talk to everyone in English.

I travel a lot and everytime i go somewhere new i try to learn their language. even if you only know a little itll take you a long way. just asking someone if they speak english in that countries language can get you more respect because at least you are trying and they understand that you dont know a million languages. however, i do believe that americans should speak more than one language. i do not see why not... its because americans are ignorant and have high egos, and the sad part is that they are not so bright, there are exceptions, but the majority feel that they are superior when in fact they are not and just look stupid going to other countries thinking english is the only language that should be spoken anywhere.
