How do you publish a book? What are the costs?

I don't need you to tell me how unlikely it is (because I know) please just give me a step by step procedure of what to do once you have written it and would like to send it to a publisher. Like, do you send a letter with the story? If so, what should it say?

Thank you in advance, because I can't find a website that tells me :(

There are actually a number of websites that answer this question. Just do a google search on how to publish a novel.

If you want to self publish, amazon.com has a way to do it. There are many, many authors there who self publish in ebook form, but most of these books are priced anywhere from $2.99 to free. If you are publishing your work for the first time, and want to go the self publishing ebook route, you'll probably need to price your work very low to get readers.

If you want to be published by a publishing house, and if you are currently unpublished, first you need to have actually finished your book. Then, you will need the services of an agent. Once you have an agent to represent you, that agent shops your book around to various publishers to find one who will publish your work.

In order to obtain an agent, you will need to send your prospective agent what is called a "query letter" along with a synopsis of your story. This is a rather complicated subject and one that can't be answered very well here. As I just stated, do a search on how to publish a novel.

I can point you to one website that I've learned a lot from: HollyLisle.com. She is a fantasy writer who also does what she calls, "paying it forward," and helping other wannabe authors learn to write. She also offers an online writing course called, "How to think sideways," that is excellent. Lots of info on her site. Go check it out.
