I take it this is a whole chicken? Starting at the top of the breast area, using your fingers, lift the skin away from meat, and then from that small entry work your fingers back and also down towards the legs. Slide your herbs and flavorings underneath and then spread it around to coat as much area as you can underneath the skin. This is a great way to add flavorings and it works wonderfully. The skin will stay intact and your chicken will taste wonderful! I usually use some minced garlic and fresh thyme, but a mix of dried herbs works great too!
