How do you set the voicemail for a Sony Ericsson phone?

I have a Sony Ericsson W58Oi cell phone and i have had it for a couple of months. Since i don't want to have to pay for caller ID i want to set the voicemail but i can't figure out how to do it.
I have tried holding and pressing down 1 but all that does is call my voicemail and since i don't have a message set or anything no one can actually use it.
Please help me, it's really annoying missing calls and not knowing who they're from!

I assume you're with AT&T.

Also callerID is usually a standard feature...
