I used to use it all of the time, but I haven't used photoshop for quite some time now.

So I've forgotten most things.

I put a photo on a transparent layer, and click with the magic want to select the area I want.

Then I push the DELETE button.

I thought that used to work, but now it does nothing.

I also need to know how to feather with the same method.

I'd really love some help, thanks.

first you access the wand feature by highlighting it with your mouse curser. Then you right click to access the options file. Under options select the "what to do with my life" drop down box. After completing that task double click on "kill yourself" and then proceed to stop asking dumb ass questions on line.
