How does a homebody meet people?

I'm 21 and living by myself. I'm extremely shy and have low confidence. There isn't anything physically or mentally wrong with me. I don't like clubs or dancing, which is where most of my friends meet their partners. I'm worried about using dating sites encase my friends find out.

Has anyone my age had a good experience with dating/social websites? Any other suggestions? Please...
