how does aim work on a blackberry 8310?

i have a unlocked blackberry 8310 for t-mobile but its originally for at&t....is there a way i could get aim on my phone without paying t he data charge so itll just count as text message charge? for example, downloading it from the blackberry site or is it free with the aim app on the blackberry?
