How does the bird flu in China affect China as a whole? I'm not asking about the people who contract the disease. They obviously get sick or die. I'm asking about China in terms of their economy, reputation, and history.

The actual effect of bird 'flu in China, a nation of 1.2 billion people, must be something very close to absolute ZERO !
As regards the economy, it will suffer almost nothing.
History ? Just another tiny blip, not unlike their numerous earthquakes and coal-mining disasters.
Reputation ? Though all Communist societies have a fear of being ridiculed, the Chinese are smart enough to pass the blame for the
outbreak of bird 'flu onto chickens.
