How does the Netflix one DVD at a time work with downloads?

I have the plan of one DVD at a time, but this also includes the instant play. So I have a regular queue with mail in DVDs and an instant play queue. If I can only have one at a time, how does this work? If I mail my DVD back, will the next one be mailed or will a movie be downloaded?
