...torrents? My friend, a very bright guy and a great sportsman, got sent to court for downloading torrents, the judge decides to make an exemplary case out of him and sentences him to 5 years in jail.
He had plans to study engineering in university, which I guess is out the window now. How is jail going to fix him now?
How fair is our penal system? Is this the same justice guaranteed by our constitution?
Distance learning engineering? Are you crazy man? You got workshops and labs in prison? I am talking about Aerospace Engineering here, not Psychology and Women Studies.

In Canada saying "being gay is wrong" will get you 5 years, 20k fine, and court fees.

B*llshit to not getting an Engineering degree if he goes to prison. Plenty of distance learning programmes exist, people can get degrees in prison; it just requires him not to be a weak ass.

I've been incarcerated in mental institutions, I still managed to work on my first bachelors in Social Science while there. I also recently had a stay at another mental home and was still doing my current Political Science degree.

Considering far worse crimes receive less in penalties - I would say this is bs.

You know bs for that much time.
