How is it that movies from the 70's are on blu ray? I don't think they had hd...

thats what i thought, but i just rented the movie "little big men" on blu ray and it definately looks hd. way, way better than dvd which looks blocky on my 42"
 
Sorry, but the blu-ray disk may be capable of higher resolution, but if it isn't also contained in the source then what you see will only as good as the original material. Think letterbox format which fits the width to the existing screen and leaves black space above and below. That is like having a Ferrari capable of sustained 200 MPH on the Autobahn and then driving it on city streets in 1st gear at 25 MPH... All it means is that when you view the movie on blu-ray, you will be able to better see all of the defects in the original movie MUCH better than was possible when it was made. Resolution does NOT improve just because your recording equipment is better now than it was when the film was made.
