How long can you leave out hard-boiled eggs in the water they cooked?

I made a dozen hard-boiled eggs, removed them from the heat, covered them & a couple hours later or so put them in the fridge. I would have sooner, but completely forgot. I made egg salad today, but was wondering did I leave the eggs sit out in the boiled water too long, before I put them in the fridge? No one has ate the egg salad yet, I did eat one of the eggs last night when I peeled it, didn't get sick, but have read so much about egg safety, & wasn't sure about this?
