How many days before a physical fitness test should one rest?

I usually do weight training and cardio for two hours a day, 3-5x a week. However, I have a physical assessment coming up for work, and it's imperative that I perform well. It includes the typical sit/pull/push-ups (which I am awful at) and running (which I'm relatively good at).

I heard I should lay off everything and rest 48 hours prior to the exam. Is that right? And does that really go for cardio, too?

Any random tips are appreciated, too. Thanks for helping.
