How many miles will a Citroen Saxo VTR engine go for before it becomes...

...too expensive to fix? If driven reasonably sensibly how many miles could be squeezed out of a Saxo VTR engine? I intend to drive sensibly and economically but i could not vouch for the previous owners so i am just wondering how long before it dies? Im looking at between 8 and 10 year old models as i have a low budget....

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Impossible to judge. It will depend on how it has been serviced and looked after and how hard it has been used.
car engines are not identical even in the same car model and make produced on the same assembly line on the same day. The engines internals are made to within certain machine tolerances. A good one that is on the right sizes for most things will last longer than a poor one with lots of within tolerances variations.
You could buy a VTR with 100000 on the clock and it could do another 100000 so long as you service it properly and don't push it too hard. You could equally buy one with 60000 on the clock which blows its engine up in the first week you have it.
Buying a second hand car on the cheap is a lottery and as in lotteries some you win and some you lose. If you are short on income to look after the car or to repair it you will end up with a worthless heap pretty soon - think on that too

If it's reliability you're after then I'd advise staying away from Saxos (and Citroens) in general. They were a horrendously unreliable car when new never mind at 10 years old. My wife's was bought new from Citroen with the first major repairs being a full new gear box at 12,000 miles and by 30,000 miles it was ready for scrapping. They are also one of the worst cars of their time for safety.

From what you've said you should look at German or Japanese diesels to achieve what you're looking for. A VW diesel engine (for example a Polo as a Saxo alternative) will be good for 200,000 miles.
