How many pap smears HPV before becomes detected?

I just found out I have HPV. I've only ever been with one partner, but before we started dating, he had been with a few other women sexually previous. I just had a pap smear a week ago and tests show my cells being abnormal. The weird thing is, I have had 2 pap smears before and the results came back normal. So does this mean that I may have had it all this time (even with the 2 paps) and it just didn't show up until now? Or does it mean something else?

I've been reading that HPV can lie dormant for years, but does that mean even after I got it, that its possible that it remain undetected for 2 pap smears?

Absolutely this is possible. You may not have contracted in the first two times because you may have a very good immune system. But on going sexual activity with a partner with HPV is bound to happen. With the HPV virus you need to keep a close eye out for warts or any other growths in the vaginal area. They have to be removed as soon as possible. Removing the wart is not at all a painful procedure, it is done right in your gynecologist office. But if you let it go they many times become cancerous or the cells begin to change to cancerous. This involves what is called a Vulvectomy which is a removal of the wart and all of the surrounding area which causes a deformity of the vaginal area. You never want this to happen and also ignoring the warts is the leading cause of cervical cancer. I don't mean to scare you just to let you know the seriousness of watching for growths and having them removed as soon as possible. If this boyfriend knew he had HPV you really need to say goodbye to him as he deliberately gave you a lifetime STD and great harm and fear of further damage to yourself. It is actually against the law to knowingly transmit an STD such as this to someone. Just be sure that you take care of yourself. There have been many cases of recovery from HPV by eating properly with lots of protein, veggies and fruits plus vitamins over a period of time.
