and my friend told me that when you first go to get a membership, they make you pay for the first month and the last month. but what is meant by the last month? is it the last month of the current year?

Mine was $29 a month in the Phoenix area. I think it is the same nationwide.
So it is going to cost you like $58 to sign up. They will only sign you with a debit/credit card.
They will debit your account on your anniversary day. So if you sign up on the 25th, They will debit you before the 25th of the next month.
So you will pay for March to April, then around April 21 they will debit you for April to May.
The last month is 30 days after you give notice IF you give notice properly.
Read the contract. You have to give notice before the debit day for the next month. So at the very minimum, you are committed through the end of May, even if you give notice the same day you sign up!
It is very confusing and also very profitable for them.
I gave my notice to the Manager where I went and he still didn't terminate my account properly. It took 3 months to get all the money back I was owed.
Most people don't realize they are making that commitment and usually get very frustrated and upset. I saw a guy almost punch a staffer when signing in one day because he didn't understand the charges.
Two words of advice.
Go to the gym at the time of day you are going to be able to workout. Se if there is enough room and equipment available. Next, check the equipment, steam room, sauna, showers, and locker rooms. What shape are they in? They were in bad shape at the one I used.
That is why I left. Some facilities are newer and/or cleaner than others.
Good luck.
