How much does long-term rental usually cost?

I'm thinking about getting a long-term rental from January to August this year. I'm not a car owner and I thought about actually buying a car but still couldn't justify all the hassles and cost, as I'm going abroad after the summer. Has anyone ever tried any long-term rental service before? What kind of monthly rate am I expecting here if I just need a compact or mid-size car? Any other things I should be aware of?
