Its pretty unlikely. Typically, most devices have a separate amount of memory, similar to RAM in a computer. You can't put music or apps in this space; its an area used for running processes. Free space should not influence the Ipod's functionality.
I have noticed older Ipods encountering similar problems to what you're mentioning though. I personally think it may be planned obsoletion.
