How much gas would an SUV burn while idling?

My neighbor starts her car and lets it idle for at least 20-30 minutes before she leaves. Of course she complains about bad gas mileage! Just wondering about how much gas she's wasting when she allows her SUV engine to idle for that length of time (at least once or twice per day).

According to the manufacturers, today's cars don' t need a warm up period. I think one or two minutes in extreme cold weather is a good idea. 20 minutes is way too much. Twice a day,20minutes,2 gallons a day? I bet she never checks her tire pressure either in cold weather a tire can lose 2 or 3 psi

If she really cared, shed start the car and drive off like she should. In the mean time let her whine all she wants. She would use no gas at all if she drove a diesel and she'd be burning up less diesel fuel than a like sized gasoline engine.

It would be impossible to guess what her mileage is because we don't know the year make and model of the SUV. Engine size, vehicle weight, two or four wheel drive, ambient temperature, fuel octane, minutes idling per day and engine oil type all contribute to fuel consumption.

it depends on so many factors...such as the size of the engine... if the lights ar on, if the heater is one , a/c is on......the temp outside. these all play a huge role in determing how much gas it uses.

but for a general answer.... lets say its cold outside and she has the heater on and her car has a mid ize engine such as a v-6.

i would estimate she is wasting around a gallon of gas doing this.
