...stock ford 460? i was told that in the mid 70's ford detuned the 460 big block by retarding the timing with the timing chain. is there any truth to this and if so how much horsepower is lost because of it

Generally speaking, you will move the torque and horsepower curve around a bit depending on whether you retard or advance the cam, but the total out put won't significantly change.
