For the UK, it's generally 6 months. It doesn't take that long to get a replacement, although will set you back in the region of £70, and much better than not being allowed to travel.
 
...asking? my friend is asking as his runs out in april and he's hoping to travel in march
 
Don't cut it too close. Do you mean the end of April?

As long as enough time remains in order to return before expiration.

Consider possible delays.
 
This depends on where your both are going. I think he better renew his passport fast cause many of the countries needs at least 6 month validity to enter. So if he is visiting such a country, he will be refused to enter the country.
