immortal? is it possible in the future that medical breakthroughs could be made and humans could essentially become immortal? living for thousands of years?

what if there was a way to preserve our bodies? sort of matrix style? and our brains were hooked up to computers? i mean it is already possible to control video games with ur mind alone. is it so impossible a thought to have our bodies preserved and our minds hooked up to computers?
