How to ask for date on internet? Strange territory...?

There is someone I don't know that well from facebook. They say they want a boyfriend on their general status. They added me on f.b.

I had a brief wall-to-wall chat that ended kind of nowhere.

How do I just randomly ask to hang out or date or something? It seems like it would be a bit strange. Do I send a private message or would that be even more strange?
lol I see where people are coming from but I suprised that it's a concensus (SP).

And I'm a dude.

you never know he could be some freakk!!!!!!! Please don't we don't want the raped/murdered etc. rates to go up. unless you know him but know please don't
