THERE IS NO WAY TO BEAR PROOF ANYTHING!

If a bear decides it wants your gear just back away slowly and let the bear have it. Now if you want to reduce the chances of a bear finding you or your gear you need to put your food and anything else smelly in a bear resistant container and put that in the bear resistant food containers at the campsites, if they have them, or hang them up in a tree out of reach. Do not cook within 100 feet of your tent and wash out everything when your done. If you can smell it it's guaranteed a bear will smell it to.

Now if your in bear country wear red flannel and carry bells and pepper spray. The red flannel will help you to be seen and the bells will help you to be heard, most often bears will avoid human contact. The pepper spray will give you somewhat of a chance to get away for those sudden close encounters but is not guaranteed (read the fine print). One way to tell if your in bear country is to look for bear scat, rubbings etc. I saw a rubbing 16ft high once. Now bear scat is easy to identify it will have red flannel in it bells and smell of pepper spray.

all they would want is the food, and you can buy a bear canister for that. about 60-75 dollars, a bit expensive but worth it. YOu can get them at REI or Sports Authority or stores like that. Basically, you put all your food in the canister (and stuff like toothpaste, sunscreen, lotion) and carry it in your backpack during they day, and at night, put it like 50 ft away from your campsite. When you go to buy one, the people at the store will know more about what to do with it.
