I have to change the clutch in my 1997 Volkwagen Jetta GLX VR6--have instructions but it doesn't say if I have to drop the engine or not? Any other viable information you may have is also appreciated.

If its rear wheel drive then no. You can remove the driveshaft and withdraw the transmission straight back. If its front wheel drive its more then often easier to remove the entire engine and and set it down on the floor and work on it.

You usually support the engine from the top by placing something strong (ie 4x4 wood) across the engine bay (inner fender lip to inner fender lip).
You'll need special 'triple square' bits to remove axles from flanges on tranny.
