How to discuss problems I'm having with manager, with the manager?

My manager has set up a meeting with me in a few weeks. He usually sets up monthly meetings with subordinates from his department to see how things are going.

Unfortunately, I have been having issues with this manager. I was recently told by another party that this manager had been painting me in a somewhat unfavorable light behind my back, that my performance ranked low compared to others in my department. I was shocked, as I had received nothing but positive feedback from him for over a year, about what a great job I was doing and appreciate all the hard work. Then during one of our recent meetings, he starts to insinuate that I didn't have the 'talent' or the 'potential' to do my current job position.

So obviously I am not happy at all about this. It was bad enough finding out the way I did, but then for the manager to 'confirm' what he was saying behind my back was even worse. At the time, I tried to brush it off and continue with my job, but it has really bothered me and several of my coworkers could see that something is bothering me.

So my question is, how do I tell the manager about how I am feeling, in a non confrontational and professional manner? Trying to keep it in and forget it hasn't worked at all and only makes me more bitter. Manager is not a bad guy, most seem to like him but I am not happy about what happened.

Thanks.
