How to put an iPhone 3G S on vibrate / silent?

So, I thought I was able to put the phone on vibrate. The volume is supposedly off and I have vibrate on, but whenever I call my phone, I still hear the iPhone ringer. I just got the phone today, so I'm still learning to work it, but if anyone could tell me step-by-step how to put my phone on vibrate and on silent, that would be great. Thank you so much!

There is a button on the left hand side above the volume buttons. Push the button to the back.
 
Unlock phone
click settings app
click sounds option
look for bar
make sure its all the way down
