I have read the repair manual and the one offered on line with autozone. Both say to release the tension bolt. Then to push the alternator in to loosen the belt. But I don't understand if they mean inward the center of the engine or in toward the cab of the truck.

Anybody want to help?

The tension bolt is the bolt you would loosen to adjust the belt, you should see something that looks like a slider. just loosen the bolts and push the alternator as if to adjust the belt to loosen it
