How to start a 2003 suzuki suv that has locked up in drive?

Engine was still on but gears have locked up. Please help.
Mother is on the freeway driving to a different city. Her call just lock up while she was driving.In an unknown area at the moment.
 
You description is really confusing...Let's see:

1. "...has locked up in drive?" - She stopped, then the car died? How did she have the engine "stopped" in the middle of the highway, or on the road???

2. You cannot start a car - any car - in D, because there is a safety switch, and if the car is "stuck" in D and cannot be taken out of it, you might have a problem in the steering column or in the shifting stick.

3. "Engine was still on but gears have locked up" How can THIS happen? You CANNOT turn it off? That means there is something wrong in the gear bor, or in the Transfer case (when you use the 4WD.

Call a mechanic. There must be a need to remove the gearbox. You won't be able to start it and it might be dangerous to drive it like that.
