How to stop gossiping?

I have a bad habit of gossip about my very best friend. It's really been weighing on my conscience lately and I know I need to change. How do I tell my friends that I will no longer be making jokes or talking about my friend in a negative way?

Just tell them you were joking and tell them your sorry. And gossip is bad cause it can get you beat up. But instead of saying negative things, you can say positive things...
