How to style asian hair (short, male)?

Hi guys, my hair is short but when it grows the sides stick out and it makes my head look huge so I don't know how to style it, I usually style it upwards and to the right but my hair is so hard and stiff, it's impossible to style, so I guess the question is, is there anyway to make my hair softer to style easier?
I don't really want to buy new stuff
