Im writing a speech about poetry of Victorian times, but i want to start my introduction with an Imagine... so i can introduce the topic.
So far i have Imagine living in a time where there was no electricity, no cars and an unimaginable distinction between the poor and wealthy. A period of evolution in English politics and the expansion of the British Empire, as well as political and social reforms on the continent.

But that is so not interesting! Anyone have any ideas, to make it catchy and interesting?
I also want to aim it to women, so maybe something about the role of women and treatment- so then it can lead easily to my two poets- who are both rich :)

Sorry if that confuses you, any help is fantastic! thanks

If you want it interesting use humor or sex it up, luckily Victorian "sexy" is a bit humorous to begin with, and a little tamer than today's version. It plays well with the role of women approach, also.

"Imagine walking down the street and witnessing the scandal caused when a young lady stepped from the curb, accidentally exposing her ankle to a shocked world. Imagine being at the beach and a gentleman approaches you even though the immodest bathing suit he is wearing only comes down to his knees and leaves his breastbone scandalously visible to any ladies who may happen to be passing by" etc...
