How will the Chevrolet Volt be better than a Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid?

News was just released that the Chevrolet Volt integrates the gasoline engine into its drive train. More specifically, at some speeds it contributes to the propulsion effort, but only once the battery pack has run down and the engine has turned on to run the generator. The electric motor never drives the wheels on its own, only as a hybrid, using both motor and engine.

I am looking for any glimmer of hope that makes the Chevrolet Volt worth while in comparison to the Toyota Prius.

NOTE: Part of my frustration is that GM made an electric car already, see it in this movie: http://www.epinions.com/review/Who_Killed_The_Electric_Car_Chris_Paine/content_401420750468

if all you're looking for is a reason as to why the volt is better than the prius, i can answer that for you: its a chevy versus a toyota. toyota has recalled 40% of their cars, chevrolet even at their worst times has produced pretty good cars.

not to mention the volt looks a crapload better than the turtleshell prius.

Greg is correct and this time GM is selling them, not just leasing like before.

Toyota is far too plagued with problems to even consider. The 40% recall rate greg mentioned goes all the way back to 1998 so it is an on going problem NOT just recent like most claim. That 40% rating is the worst in automotive history.

Many will also complain about the GM bail out but will fail to mention that Toyota has taken a bailout that stuck the Japanese tax payers FOUR TIMES..........
